Why aren't that many female rockstars?

The reason I ask this is because rock and metal is more male-dominated. Sure, there are female rock fans but not that many female rock musicians. Female musicians are often involved in mostly pop and R&B. The only female rockstars I can think of is the metal band Girlschool, Meg White from the White Stripes and Cindy Blackman.
