Is downloading a movie through internet truly illegal if its not for profit?

downloading from P2P sites is essentially stealing the song/movie/album. if you were to steal the physical item, you would be depriving the media company of their right to the proceeds, downloading media without first paying for it is doing the same thing, thus it is illegal.
